Hej there and welcome back! Yes, my headline says ‘WASTE’. And don’t get me wrong already here: I am highly grateful for the western medication and doctors when it comes to emergencies, no doubt, they are saving lives!
BUT: the majority of medication taken and money spend on is at home! What have you taken recently? Aspirin against a headache? Any drops or liquids to prevent a flu? Maybe even medication for heart disease or diabetes? I admit, I sometimes take Vitamin B12 as a supplement as I am living mainly vegan and just this week got a homeopathic medication for my gut. But here in Germany, majority of the amount of prescribed medication is paid by the insurance! Apparently, this is not the case for most countries.
Global spending on medicine continues to grow. As of 2019, approximately 1.25 trillion U.S. dollars had been spent on medicines, up from just 887 billion U.S. dollars in 2010. That number is expected to increase to 1.59 billion by the year 2024. Spending on medicines has increased everywhere globally. However, the United States takes the lead in total medicines spending globally and is expected to remain the top country for medicines spending through 2024.
Global pharmaceutical industry
Globally the pharmaceutical industry is a growing industry fueled by aging populations and new drugs to treat rare and specialty diseases. Regionally, the pharmaceutical industry generates the most revenue through the North American and European markets. Within all markets globally the top therapeutic class is oncology, followed by antidiabetics.
Top pharmaceutical companies
There are several large pharma companies that participate in the global pharmaceutical industry. As of 2019, U.S.-based pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson was the top pharmaceutical company, followed by Swiss company Novartis, based on market capitalization. Among pharmaceutical companies, some have produced more new drugs than others. The U.S. and Europe are responsible for the largest number of new pharmaceutical substances from 2014 to 2018.
So I think you got the picture by now!
What I mean to say is that we could spend less money on it! We could avoid the risks and side affects! We could spend our money for pleasing things or to invest in holistic health!
For example, you have a headache and the easiest way might be to take a pain killer. But didn’t you ever ask yourself where does the headache come from? Maybe you just haven’t had enough water? Maybe it would be gone after drinking a glass of water to help the blood flow better again but instead you chemically did that? Medication DO NOT TREAT THE ROOT CAUSE, they just let the symptoms go away!
So now imagine we are not talking about a headache but something more serious and instead of changing the factors that cause the issue you just keep taking medication and one day wonder why they don’t work anymore and it gets really serious??
And not only that the medication never holistically helped, you might have also spend A LOT of money on it which is just gone??
Well that sucks! But it’s also the reality of million or billion of people around the world! And, great news, it can be avoided!
So now for sure you can be extra smart and contact me for Health Coaching but it would already be enough for me if you just think about my words, let it sink down and maybe choose to ACTUALLY do something for you health 🙂
